In the News…
A member of the Federal Election Commission addressed the House Judiciary Committee, drawing attention to her agency’s current predicament—the need for more commissioners. The White House nominates commission members. While it is not a congressional problem, their lack of a quorum makes exercising their oversight more than difficult.
That said, Representative Ted Deutch of Florida wants the activities of the partially dysfunctional commission made more difficult through a constitutional amendment that would undo the 2020 Citizens United decision.
Congressman Duetch has introduced a Democracy for All amendment. Of it, he said, “Over the past 10 years, we have seen wealthy individuals and corporations evade disclosure and slip around anti-coordination rules. The deeply rooted problem of money in politics requires a constitutional amendment.”
A former FEC commissioner said corporate spending in elections still amounts to typically less than 5 percent, with most political money still coming from individual donors.
